April 16, 2007 - Turner Tech releases secure DNP3 protocol source code
DNP3 was originally developed in the early 1990's and was typically used on private serial communication channels. TCP/IP capability has since been added and now operational networks are becoming increasingly connected to company and business networks. As a result, more attention is being paid to cyber security and protection of critical infrastructure.
The DNP technical committee has been working for several years now on a proposal for secure authentication. At the DNP Users Group 2007 annual general meeting, held on Feb 5th 2007, version 1.00 of the DNP Secure Authentication specification was approved.
As a contribution to this effort, Turner Tech has developed a working prototype to help demonstrate the proposed specification. During the development, Turner Tech worked with the DNP3 technical committee in reviewing the documents and as a result changes are being made to improve the specification. The prototype source code has been released under a permissive free and open source license. Carl Turner, president of Turner Tech, hopes that this will lead to a greater understanding and adoption rate of secure DNP3 within the industry.
